Above ground level. Your height over the terrain directly below you.

Above mean sea level. The altitude airspace limits are normally expressed in.

Control area. Controlled airspace, usually with a floor well above the ground.

Control zone. Controlled airspace around an airport, normally from the ground up.

Digital elevation model. The terrain height data behind AGL, arrival height and the side view.

End of speed section. Where the task clock stops in a race task.

Federation Aeronautique Internationale. Also used for the FAI triangle, where no leg is shorter than 28 percent of the total.

The last leg, flown without stopping to climb, to reach ESS or goal.

A closed triangular flight without the leg constraints of an FAI triangle.

The radar style tile: your trail, the thermal core, wind and target pointers, and nearby airspace around you. Called the thermal assistant tile before 1.7.2.

A group of pilots climbing together in the same thermal.

The end of the task. A cylinder or a line, sometimes at a height above the ground.

The standard flight track file format, named after the FAI Gliding Commission.

Lift to drag, the glide ratio. Horizontal distance travelled per unit of height lost.

A competition scoring concept rewarding pilots who fly at the front of the gaggle.

The expected climb in your next thermal, used to work out how fast to fly between climbs.

The shortest legal path through a task, touching each control zone. Task distances are measured along it.

The local sea level pressure. Setting it correctly makes barometric altitude match published airspace limits.

Start of speed section. Where the task clock starts.

The airspeed that gives the best average cross country speed for a given expected climb.

A moment when the start opens. A task may have one or a series at fixed intervals.

Turnpoint. A control zone the task must pass through.

The organizer ending a running task, usually for safety.
